One time that I used rhetorical analysis was last year in English 150. We
were working on our portfolios and we had to write vision pieces for them. The first
one we did was art. We had to find a price of art on campus and write about it. Some
of the things we had to talk about was the background of the artist and why Iowa
state chose to have this piece on campus. I chose to write about the Iowa State
Whirlwind in front of the MU. My interpretation of this piece was that it represented
the life of a college student. I thought the little figurines at the top were the ties at the
artist had with iowa state and everything that goes on at the MU and in campus. At
the bottom of the sculpture there is a statement that says, " Going to college should
pick a person you and set him or her down in a new place with new ideas and deeper
understanding of the world." My interpretation of this statement was that college
gives you a chance to become a well rounded person.
The second vision piece I had to write was about music. We had to pick a
love song and explain why we felt like it was the greatest love song ever written. I
chose to about write about Whitney Huston song I will always love you. I felt like
the emotional elements of the song made it so powerful. When Whitney Huston sings
the lyrics you hear the richness in her voice and you really feel what she is singing. I
felt like it was the greatest song ever written was because it felt like she is singing
directly to you.I guess over the year I've done some rhetorical analysis but never
really knew it. I always thought I was writing to give my interpretation and my view
point on things.
