Portfolio reflection
Portfolio refection
The changes I made to this portfolio assignment were first moving the section that
discusses the proposal to the very beginning underneath the due date of the proposal. I
think chronologically it works better and it makes more sense to have that content
underneath the due date. Then I took out all of the details except the first two bullet
points I think the first two bullet points some up what's required.
In the audience and purpose section I started that with the second sentence and
eliminated everything else because I think it's not needed or necessary and it's just
overwhelming. In the first section I took out the beginning and started with the second
sentence because that's the actual direction and main point. As far as the questions go I
eliminated the communication habits and processes questions because in the
communication development those questions are kind of implied in our going to be
needed in order to explain the communication development. I found it to be very
repetitive.
In the second section I kept the first little paragraph as the main content in it I
think that was the point of what needs to be done for that section. Then I took out the
“important” phrase and cut it down. I took out the first half and left the second. I also
took out the planning and drafting section. I felt like this section is something that you
can explain in class while you're going over this assignment. I don't think you really need
it written out. Then I ended the section with the last bold sentence.
In the third section I took out all of the examples. I think that it was just too much
detail to say one thing. I started the section with the bold phrase that said “in your a
reflection”. For this section and left those bullet points because that's the main content
and requiring for this section. I left the portfolio evaluation criteria section the way it is. I
think it’s fine the way it is. I didn't change that at all. I looked at that section as rubric and
what the overall portfolio should have.
A lot of the things that I cut out are things that you could actually say in class. It
doesn't really need to be written down. There's always going to be questions in one-way
shape or form. So instead of being too detailed now it's more of stating what the main
requirements are and then letting the class ask questions. Overall I honestly think the
assignment just had too many details in to make it more complex than it needs to be. I
just found the main points in each section and got rid of all the unnecessary stuff.
Portfolio revision
Assignment #5: Portfolio
Due April 30th
Proposal Due: In conference with me April 16th or 18th (Not turning it in but I want to see it)
Purpose of chart and planning questions
Audience and purpose
As you finish English 250 and do this more in-depth self-assessment, you will 1) compose an overall reflection for your portfolio that introduces its contents and 2) explain in individual section reflections how the artifacts you’re including show your communication abilities.
Portfolio contents
Please submit the following in two, 2-pocket folders. You may also post them to your blog, especially if you have videos or color photos in your portfolio. They are due April 30th.
1. Table of contents and introductory reflection
Write your overall reflection in the form of either a letter (addressed to your instructor), using the following questions as a guide to help you generate ideas.
Communication development
· What talents or strengths do you possess in the following areas?
o W—writing (context, substance, organization, style, delivery)
o O—oral (interviews, large group discussions, small group discussions, presentations, etc.)
o V—visual (Place or Artifact analysis, brochure, etc.)
o E—electronic (word processing, e-mail content, ethical use of the Internet and electronic images, etc.)
· What new discoveries have you made in these areas?
· In which area(s) do you wish you’d been able to do more?
2. Revision of an assignment with reflection
For this part of the portfolio, you will revise one of your earlier assignments (1-4). As you think about which piece to revise, choose one that 1) allows you to focus on writing and 2) you can easily see ways of improving. You need to do a significant amount of rewriting. Importantly, envision and specify a likely audience for your piece and think about what you can do to facilitate their understanding of your communication. The piece you submit here should clearly be more successful in achieving its purpose and reaching its intended audience than the earlier version.
3. -OVE piece(s) with reflection
In your reflection for this section, discuss the following:
· Why you chose this/these piece(s) as evidence of your best work in the oral, visual, and electronic modes
· What, if any, changes you made to the original versions, why, and to what benefit
· What you believe the piece/s demonstrate about you as an oral, visual, and electronic communicator
Portfolio Evaluation Criteria
· The portfolio includes all required components (see above).
· The reflective pieces (introductory letter/essay, individual section reflections, and closing letter/essay) accomplish the following:
o Include specific references to prior work (examples) to support your discussion
o Demonstrate a thoughtful, honest, thorough and coherent analysis of your progress
· The written revision (Pocket 2) better satisfies the criteria of the original assignment:
o Substance: demonstrates a thorough rethinking of the subject
o Context: contains additional material appropriate for audience and purpose
o Organization: achieves improved focus, structure, and coherence
· Other OVE piece/s (Pocket 3) demonstrate/s competence in these modes
· Revision and reflection avoid errors distracting to the reader

Communication studies is defined as the process of human communication this is commonly defined as the sharing of symbols to create meaning between two or more people within a particular content and environment. This process is found in every day life in society. As humans we apply the studies and theories to communication to our everyday life in various ways. The discipline encompasses a range of topics, from face-to-face conversation to mass media outlets such as television broadcasting.Communication studies have many different areas and elements to it but the main focus behind communication studies is the message and the content. The Communication model describes how the message goes from one party toanother.

Every occupation has some element of communications in this image depicts all the different types of areas of communications such as intercultural and rhetorical. It also represents different jobs that have it in there such as journalist and television. Any major that you go into has communications and it subjects like math and science shown here. This shows that there are communications within different subjects. Communication is part of society. This piece also shows what communication studies stands for. Communication studies is about integrating the different dimensions and discipline and seeing the overlapping. This word cloud on communication studies depicts how communication is the center of everything and explains the impact that communication studies has on other areas of studies.

Writing and communicating have a lot of similarities between them. Writing is one form of communication but the thought process that goes on behind it is similar as well. Both communicating and writing focus on the rhetorical aspect. Mailloux, S. (2000). It's about how we take in information absorbed it and how we interpret it in order to be able to share with someone else and what way do we think is the best way to do so.
“Writing "works" in Communication in myriad ways. At the "lowest" level of skill, employees and managers send numerous e-mails daily. This form of communication is usually informal in tone, although expected to be error free. At the "highest" level, those who work in Communication careers write reports for upper level management, clients, investors, among others. These documents contain different types of information, will be descriptive or persuasive, and have an expectation of being error free. In addition, these documents integrate design and layout principles and may be delivered on websites only. In the "middle" writing might involve press releases, correspondence to customers or job applicants. These "middle" level writing tasks are typically one page and require professionalism, tact, concise and precise wording, and again - error free. “(Dr.Coffelt)
Speech Communications is a branch of Communication Studies. Speech has more of the written and oral communication in it. In speech communication the focus is on how to take the ideas that we come up with and present them and have other understand where you are coming from. “The focus on the audience and modify the message accordingly - vocabulary usage, tone, brevity, depth of explanation. “ A lot of writing that is done is communications is reflective. Some things that are learned from this branch are how evaluate yourself and your ideas. Consonants into commencing rhetorical thinking often translated into other areas of discipline. “Speech communications uses some of the saying rhetorical techniques in formulating the concepts of what speech communications is.” (Ringlee, Connie 2014)
Behind the different types of communication there is always a theory of some sort that explains why and how we communicate the way we do. Theory acts as the proof to communication. Everyone has different communication styles and communication studies have different theories the go along with different areas of communication. Communication theories are either objective orinterruptive. Em Griffin, describes interpretive theories as “the linguistic work of assigning meaning or value to communicative texts; assumes that multiple meanings or truths are possible” (Griffin, p.15). He also defines objective theory as “the assumption that truth is singular and is accessible through unbiased sensory observation; committed to uncovering cause-and-effect relationships” (Griffin, p.14). “Having theories makes us accountable for our actions and allow us to better understand the way we communicate ourselves as well as with other people.”Dr.Vrchota (2014).When we become more aware andknowledgeable of how we use intrapersonalcommunication and the theories that go along with communication, we have the explanation. The human thought patterns, cultural context, and styles of expression are essential elements to the development of an avenue to bridge the gap.
More researchers as well as educators are starting to realize the connection between writing and communications. They are teaching their students and doing studies on that connection. Educators are teaching their students to put more of themselves and reflect on who they are at people in order to become great writers and researchers are looking at the process of creating an idea of executing it through writing. Gregory, L. (2013).
In conclusion Communication studies does not have a set definition because each discipline has its own different definition. Communication encompasses all the various definitions and perceptions of how people view communication studies. For example the math and sciences use symbols as a way to communicate their message. Broadcasting and actors focus on the content of communication. Communication studies is inclusive this is the definition of communication studies and an abstract manner. By overlapping a variety of disciplines in occupations to show how they are all interconnected. Theword cloud includes examples such as psychology and rhetorical public and biology. Communication studies is the core of which all other disciplines are based upon this image demonstrates how different disciplines use communication. Regardless of what field or discipline your interest communications is everywhere it's not always obvious but it's always present.
