Portrait of a writer

Portrait of a writer

I think the term writer is very broad. I think there are many different types of

writers. I think the term writer is mostly associated with people like authors,

journalist, professors, and other scholars. I don't see myself in any of those categories.

I think that I’m a fairly decent writer. I think I have foundation for improvement and I

always have room to grow. I feel like my writing suffer because I have so many

different ways to write something and sometimes I don’t ways pick the best way.

I see myself more of composer. I love to create music. I get such the joy from it. I love being able to tell my story and share my thoughts my feelings and dreams in a different and universal way. There is a great deal of freedom that comes along with writing music. I feel like I can say whatever I want to say however I want to say it. It is good for me because there are times when I don't always know what to say or how to say it. The only rule in writing music is follow through with the time signature and key signature that you choose to write in. I found writing music has been therapeutic for me it's help me to get things that I've been holding in for so long and it's help me to feel better about myself as a person. The inspiration for my songs comes from my life experiences. Most of them are about things that have happen to me.

I really don’t like writing papers because I think that there are so many rules and restrictions in different formats to writing papers. Every teacher that I have written a paper for wanted it to been don in different style or format. There are rules to learning and understanding the different formats and styles they want. When I prepare to write a paper and I tried to think about what's being asked of what do and me I want to say and how to say it. give myself a game to just think about how to approach writing the paper and I try to give myself time to actually do the research. Then I try to filter what information I need and what I don’t need. I prepare for different papers differently. When I write research paper I try to plan that out in advance and break everything down and then if I'm writing a reflection paper I need time to really think about it before I can write it. There have been some papers where I can write the main point but the problem I had is expanding in elaborating on the point that I'm trying to make.  I really don’t mind writing reflection papers because they are short. I like that been able to go back and look at something that I did are analyze and see what types of mindset I was in. I think it’s good to back and revisit work you’ve done.

Being a communications studies major I wrote a lot of papers that were interpretive.  The first paper I wrote was as a communication major was to pick a topic that we covered and write a reflection paper based on how we interpret the information and to see what elements of the topic we understood. I read a lot of journal articles. I had one class that was about research methods and in there we wrote a paper on the research methods that we were doing for our projects. We did a quantitative project and we had to conduct a study and then we re-created the research article of her everything that we did. It was hard because they are different components to a journal article so we had to plug in our information to where it would be an different sections require different things so you really had to plan it out and think before you start plugging things in.

The last paper that we did we had to create our own qualitative research study and do a full write about it. In my theory class that I took we talked about the different theories and we had to write papers about them and I had to be three paragraphs into pages long so we had to summarize the theory and then given example of the theory and then determine if that there was objective or interpretive.

My minor is in speech communications and I write a lot of speeches and I do a lot of outlines for speeches. Then at the end of presenting I wrote a lot of reflection papers that talk about how did I prepare for my speech, what went well during the speech and white didn't go out and what could I change if given the chance. It’s nice because it gives me a chance to really what I’ve done and the way I’ve done it. I really don’t like making outlines for my speeches because it makes me feel like I have to say everything that I wrote and in that order.

I like writing when there is truly freedom of expression. I like being about to open up and say what’s on my mind. I don’t think that writing should not have rules. I feel like writing is to stick and too tied down. I feel like to creative element is missing. It’s easy to get a point across but another think thing to create a way for the point to stick with someone.

After writing my first blog I learn that it’s a different way to communicate and share information and different thoughts. I learned that all creative artists have their ways of coming up with inspiration.  Over the years I’ve learned that there is no right or wrong way to express yourself. I understand that I’m my worst and harshest critic. Sometimes I think it’s good that I’m hard on myself because it helps to stay focus. Other times I think that I create more stress for myself than I need to because I am a perfectionist. I think I need to let go of the perfectionist mindset and trust myself and will help me.

  1. I like how you point out that there are so many different ways to write. It IS hard to know which one sometimes. One thing I hope you all take away from my class is how to read your situation, your message, and your audience, so you can pick which way is the best.

Composing is an interesting term, and I think you use it well. My field is having to move to other words besides writing anyway, because we "write" in so many modes now: videos, electronic blogs that can combine music, video and text, and so much more. How do we define writing? What is in and what is out? Where do music and art fall?

I love how you describe what composing music is like for you. I wonder: how would writing change if there were a way for you to see writing as you see composing? It sounds like you bring a lot of great research and writing experience to our class. I"m glad!
