I thought that writing this summary was
very similar to the summaries I had written in the past. My approach to writing
this summary was to read material first. Then point out was the authors main
points are. Then I tried to figure out what parts of the supporting information
will be useful to me.
I think the hardest part of this
assignment was the actual reading of the article because these articles are not
targeted for us to read as college students. they are more targeted for their
colleagues in their field. These articles have several parts to them. Each part
has subparts in it. In my article I had small summaries of the of the key concepts
so it wasn't really a flow to it. While reading the articles it was hard for me
to stay engaged even though I was reading something that was in my area and
that I would like to specialize in the way the article was written in the
language that was used made it difficult to understand. I think the easiest
part of this whole assignment was the actual writing itself, after I read
through the article and picked out what parts to use everything else just came
together.
I really wish I had a stronger background
in intercultural communications before I read this article. Right now I have a
working knowledge of briefly interpersonal and small group communications. I do
have a general idea of what intercultural communications entails but not enough
to fully understand how research is done to study it and what elements are used
to study it. I think having a full knowledge of your discipline and what you
want to specialize in really helps understand what you're reading and
summarizing.
Overall I think I learn how to summarize
better I think the readings that were assigned to us before we got started on
this assignment really help as preparation for how to read and understand
research articles. I also think that the peer-reviewed help a lot sometimes
having someone who does not understand you or your writing style gives the best
feedback. Learning how to do peer-reviewed in a non-confrontational manner
works really well. I really learned how to receive feedback better without being
so defensive.
Interesting conundrum, isn't it? It would be easier to read material in your field if you knew your field better, but you need to read in your field in order to get better at understanding it! It takes time and patience, and I think you have the right approach. And you're right: reading is often the hardest part. But part of the reason I'm asking you to read academic articles is so that you will know that you can handle them in any other class! Seems like that is working and I applaud the work you are doing to learn.
